Hemp Oil vs. Whole Plant CBD Oil and the Health Benefits for Dogs
To better understand the differences let’s start with the following…
Is Hemp Oil the Same as Whole Plant CBD Oil?
NO it is not! The most common form of hemp oil refers to the plant oil extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant, but typically not the flower or leaves. This is typically the same process used for many different types of oils such a coconut and olive. The seeds of the Hemp plant contain virtually no THC or CBD. It is possible that some hemp oil is derived from other parts of the hemp plant that contain small amounts of THC and CBD, but typically the most widely available hemp oil located in natural foods stores and grocery stores comes from hemp seed and again contains no CBD.
What are the benefits of Hemp Oil?
Hemp oil is often used as a supplement. A 2014 study found that hemp oil extracted from seeds, has a rich nutritional profile. It is packed with healthy Vitamins such a B, B1, B2 and E. In addition to vitamins, it contains fatty acids, and antioxidants which makes it a subject of numerous ongoing studies.
Hemp oil has been used all over the world in lotions, soap and cosmetics for quite some time. It has been shown to improve heart health, reduce cholesterol, psoriasis and decrease the signs of aging due to the high levels of Omega 3 & 6.
What is CBD Oil?
Typically when you see the term CBD oil it refers to a product that contains a specific amount of concentrated cannabidiol (CBD) dispersed in a carrier oil. Most often the CBD extract is dispersed in MCT also known as coconut oil. The reason coconut oil is preferred is the extremely high level of saturated fat which makes it much more readily absorbable. These fats are medium chain triglycerides not long chain so you don’t need to worry about clogging your dogs arteries!!!
High quality CBD is most commonly extracted from the flower, leaves and stalk of the hemp plant. Hemp leaves and flowers naturally contains high levels of CBD and only trace amounts of THC, making it an ideal plant for CBD extraction.
With that said, CBD can also be derived from another form of the Cannabis Sativa L plant commonly known as marijuana. This is less common, because by law the product must contain .3% THC or less to be federally legal. Marijuana is cultivated to contain high amounts of THC and naturally has little CBD.
Is CBD Safe for my Dog?
Yes! but you’ll need to make sure that the product you are buying is derived from NON-GMO, U.S.A grown and extracted hemp and made specifically for animals. Always make sure the product is certified Toxic Free or has a certification showing the extract is free of heavy metals, pesticides, fertilizers etc. Lastly always remember that it must contain less than .3% THC.
