The Science

Paws Effect recommends that you do your research on every type of supplement, food or treat that you are giving your pets. To make it a little less confusing we have summarized the basic understanding of how The Endocannabinoid System works.
In the early 90’s scientists discovered that every mammal has an Endocannabinoid System (ECS). Yes, this includes you, your dogs, cats and horses!
This system has been called the most important physiologic system involved in establishing and maintaining health.

WHAT IS THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM?
The Endogenous Cannabinoid System also known as the Endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a system of cell receptors and corresponding molecules throughout the body. While this system performs many different tasks depending on the location, it has one primary goal which is homeostasis or to maintain balance within the body no matter the exterior environment. Every Mammal produces a natural chemical called cannabinoids which react to receptors located throughout a mammal body regulating important body functions.

WHAT IS A CANNABINOID?
Simply, they are the body’s chemical messengers. There are two primary types of Cannabinoids.
Endogenous: Originating from inside the body (endo – meaning within) and produced naturally. The body rapidly breaks down endogenous cannabinoids.
Exogenous: Originating from outside the body. Exogenous cannabinoids such as Cannabidiol (CBD) stays in the body for a much longer time. This lengthening allows the Endocannabinoid system to work longer and be more efficient in bringing the body back into homeostasis.

WHAT ARE THESE RECEPTORS?
The Endocannabinoid system Is a network of cell receptors called, Cannabinoid Receptor 1 (CB1)
and Cannabinoid Receptor 2 (CB2).

CB1 receptors are found in abundance in the brain and nervous system, but also lungs, kidneys, liver, bones, heart and reproductive system.
CB2 receptors are most abundant in the immune system, but with a presence in the spleen, lungs, liver, bone and muscle.

Let’s look at this in a simpler way... Think of these receptors as “locks”. Imagine every CB1 and CB2 cell throughout the entire body as little locks and each of these has a corresponding “key” which we will call cannabinoids. Each time a Cannabinoid is bound to a CB1 or CB2 receptor it “unlocks” and relays a message, giving the cell instruction.

HELP ME UNDERSTAND WHAT CANNABIDIOL (CBD) IS…
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical compound derived from typically Industrial Hemp. It does NOT cause any psychoactive effects like THC. CBD is different in that it does not bind to a receptor or “lock”. CBD slows down the breakdown of the Endocannabinoids made naturally within the body. This allows the Endocannabinoid System to work longer and more efficiently to bring the body back into homeostasis or balance.

WHAT ARE THE FUNCTIONS OF THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM?
The Endocannabinoid System regulates all of the basic functions and patterns of our and our pet's body has to deal with, this includes Mood, Sleep, Appetite, Metabolism, Pain, Memory, Immune Function, Inflammation, Neuroprotection and development, Digestion & Reproduction.
Scientific Research studies, Independent studies as well as thousands of testimonials show that Phytocannabinoid Rich Hemp Extract can have positive effects on numerous health conditions.  It has been shown that the following conditions are benefited from the use of Phytocannabinoid Rich Hemp Extract*: Mood Stabilization (relaxation, separation, noise & general anxiety), Inflammation, arthritis & joint pain.
